While on my way up to Glacier National Park for some autumn photography I decided to take a short break and stretch my legs at this state park. Serendipity laid out a priceless scene just at that moment. The Lake was dead calm, the fall colors were lighting up, making for a perfect mirrored reflection.

I had been searching for a smaller more intimate scene in the area rather than the large scale sweeping panoramic I tend to seek out. It was the closing hour of the day and finally I came into this one after hiking down to the creek bottom. With the dimming evening light it took a long exposure, but the effect on the water provides an almost soothing effect.

On the north edge of town sets an awesome park with view of the Bridger Mountain Range in the background. Its not only a quick and easy place to test camera gear its a great place to catch some sunsets, sunrises and local landscapes. This particular evening I was rewarded with and amazing sunset to top it off with ducks on the pond.

If you've never been to the Sawtooth's in Idaho you're missing out on some extraordinary scenery and recreational opportunities. Stanley Lake is one of those places that draws you in. On this morning we were provided with an extraordinary sunrise to match the location. It just doesn't get much better for summer camping and hiking.

Serene evening, clear skies and soft light and a near full moon rise make for a beautiful view of this magnificent place. The bugs were fierce however.

Gorgeous day for hiking up the Clear Creek Trail. As we were returning heavy frontal winds hit us so hard you could barely keep a hat on your head, but by the time we arrived back to the shoreline of Green River Lake it just stopped like someone had flipped a switch. It became dead calm instantly and the lake turned glass smooth. What a day!

Along highway 212 traveling over the Beartooth Highway this is the first lake you encounter from the west. The elevation here is 9000 feet above sea level, but make no mistake be prepared for bugs they will turn you into swiss cheese in short order.Absolutely gorgeous place to camp, hike and fish.

Early Morning Reflections At Island Lake, Beartooth Plateau, Wyoming & Montana
The still calm of the lakes provide mirror reflections of the distant peaks within the Abasaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and Plateau. Elevations here are just under 10,000 feet which provide clear skies and cool mornings.

At these altitudes which are well over 9,000 feet the air is clear and pristine. On this morning we were provided a cloudless windless experience which made for some nice mirrored reflections in the lake.

The sun comes up quick and clear at these elevations during the summer months and the mosquitos are right behind not missing a second of daylight to find host to prey on, but the scenes are magnificent and hikes rewarding.

It had been raining all day, putting a damper on some photo ops, but as I was heading back to my campsite at Pebble Creek this rainbow emerged almost out of nowhere. A quick dash to the hillside opposite the river gave me the elevated perspective I wanted for this image, isolating the tree and rainbow together. Back in the studio I merged a sepia version with the rainbow colors to enhance the mood.

To many this image will look like southwestern landscape and certainly does resemble some of those areas in many ways however it is a bit further to the north straddling both Wyoming and Montana. Great views of the Bighorn Mountains in the distance.
